Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia is urging the mining industry to strengthen decarbonization efforts and take greater responsibility for environmental protection as the country pursues more sustainable economic development.
Deputy Minister of Environment and Deputy Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) Diaz Hendropriyono delivered the message at the RESOURCES ID Annual Business Meeting 2026 in Jakarta on September 21. The meeting carried the theme “Beyond Boundaries, Toward Global Excellence: Advancing Sustainable Mining Services Through Innovation and Collaboration.”
Diaz said companies with significant profits should also carry greater environmental responsibilities, including efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through decarbonization.
He also highlighted the role of the KLH/BPLH’s Company Performance Rating Assessment Program (PROPER), which recognizes companies for their environmental management and protection efforts.
Diaz expressed hope that PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTAM) could regain the PROPER Gold rating, the program’s highest category. ANTAM previously received the Gold rating but is currently ranked Green.
“I believe ANTAM can do it. It has received PROPER Gold before and is now rated Green. Hopefully, ANTAM can achieve Gold again this year and next year,” Diaz said.
Diaz said decarbonization is part of Indonesia’s national development mandate and is aligned with the country’s constitutional commitment to environmentally oriented development and the government’s Asta Cita agenda.
He said decarbonization should be pursued across all economic sectors, including industry.
To strengthen emissions monitoring, Diaz encouraged industrial companies to calculate and report their emission reductions to the KLH/BPLH through SIGN-SMART, Indonesia’s greenhouse gas inventory system.
He also referred to Presidential Regulation No. 110, which provides incentives related to emissions reduction. According to Diaz, accurate industrial emissions reporting through SIGN-SMART will support government monitoring and the development of an emissions trading system that can provide incentives for companies.
The meeting was also attended by National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Head Arif Satria, RESOURCES ID President Director Hashari Kamaruddin, ANTAM Director of Mineral Resources Management Hartono, MIND ID Director of Downstream Strategy and Operations Achmad Ardianto, ANTAM President Commissioner Irwandy Arif and Freeport Executive Vice President of Corporate Development Dharma Djojonegoro.
