Vice Minister of Environment Leads Kick-Off for Indonesia’s COP30 Delegation.

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — The Indonesian government began preparations for its participation in the UNFCCC COP30/CMP30/CMA7 climate summit, which will be held in Belém, Brazil, from November 10–21, 2025.

During a kick-off meeting in Jakarta on August 27, 2025, Vice Minister of Environment Diaz Hendropriyono stated that climate finance remains a major challenge because of unfulfilled promises.

Hendropriyono highlighted the gap between climate finance pledges and their implementation, noting that developed nations have not yet fulfilled their commitment to provide $100 million annually to developing countries.

“There are a lot of promises without realization,” he said, citing the New Collective Quantified Goals where only a fraction of the $1.3 trillion target has been agreed upon.

In addition to climate finance, Indonesia’s delegation plans to use COP30 to strengthen its carbon diplomacy.

The Indonesian Pavilion will host seminars and serve as a platform for expanding cross-sector carbon trading. The country is exploring agreements with nations like Norway, Japan, and South Korea, as well as developing Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) with PLN.

The government also seeks to expand carbon trading through Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) with international standards such as Gold Standard (GS) and Verra.

Hendropriyono emphasized that the success of these diplomatic efforts depends on strong support from various government bodies.

“We always need the support of all of you, as the Ministry of Environment does not have expertise in all fields,” he said, noting the need for a lead negotiator who understands Indonesia’s position across more than 20 working groups.

The meeting also included presentations from Deputy of Climate Change Control and Carbon Economic Value Governance Ary Soedijanto and Expert Staff for Food, Natural Resources, and Environmental Quality Laksmi Widyajayanti.

They discussed the dynamics of international negotiations and opportunities for contributions from ministries and the private sector at the Indonesian Pavilion. Strategic ministries and agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, attended the event. (*)
