Minister Bahlil Calls for Mutual Energy Cooperation at Indo-Pacific Forum

Enviro News Asia, Tokyo — Energy security took center stage at the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial and Business Forum (IPEM) held in Tokyo on March 15, 2026, as regional leaders discussed strengthening collaboration amid global geopolitical tensions.

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia addressed delegates from Indo-Pacific countries, emphasizing the need for mutually beneficial cooperation to ensure stable energy supply across the region.

He stated that global uncertainty in energy supply requires countries to work together in ways that support one another rather than compete in ways that could disrupt stability. Indonesia, he noted, has demonstrated this commitment through significant contributions to global energy supply.

According to Bahlil, Indonesia exported around 150 cargoes of liquefied natural gas in 2025 and supplied nearly half of the world’s traded coal, reinforcing global energy availability during a period of heightened demand.

He added that while cooperation remains essential, countries must also prioritize domestic energy needs when necessary. As a net oil importer, Indonesia is prepared to optimize its domestic energy resources, including increasing the use of crude palm oil for biodiesel production, to secure national energy supply.

Indonesia is the world’s largest producer and exporter of crude palm oil, with annual exports reaching approximately 30 million tons. Bahlil noted that despite global commitments such as the Paris Agreement, many countries continue to increase coal imports from Indonesia to meet immediate energy demands.

At the same time, the government remains committed to advancing energy transition and renewable energy development. This includes diversifying energy sources and implementing large-scale solar power initiatives, following directives from President Prabowo Subianto.

Bahlil highlighted Indonesia’s plan to develop 100 gigawatts of solar power capacity, prioritizing the gradual replacement of diesel power plants with solar power systems.

The forum, jointly organized by Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the National Energy Dominance Council, brought together government officials and industry leaders to address regional energy challenges.

The meeting concluded with a joint statement underscoring the importance of strengthening regional energy resilience while respecting each country’s chosen pathway toward energy transition. (*)
