AVENIR Project Empowers Senegalese Farmer to Achieve Agri-Nutrition Success

Enviro News Asia,Tambacounda — A small-scale farming initiative in eastern Tambacounda has transformed into a model of agri-nutrition success, highlighting the impact of integrated agricultural and nutrition programs.

At the center of this transformation is Fatoumata Bodian, a 33-year-old farmer who has built a thriving market garden that supports her household’s income, improves nutrition, and creates employment opportunities within her community.

Her progress has been supported by the AVENIR Project, funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by MEDA in collaboration with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT.

Fatoumata began her journey three years ago after completing a ten-month agricultural training program, which enabled her to establish a small garden with limited resources. Over time, she expanded her knowledge through practical experience, alternating between working in agribusiness and cultivating her own land.

Her farm now produces a variety of nutrient-rich crops, including lettuce, cucumbers, chili peppers, moringa, and cassava, which contribute both to household consumption and local market supply.

The initiative has significantly improved her family’s diet and reduced food expenses, while providing a stable source of income. It has also generated employment, including for family members involved in selling produce at local markets.

Experts highlight that her success reflects the broader objectives of agri-nutrition, which integrates food production with improved dietary outcomes. According to Christine Chegue of the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, the approach combines agriculture, nutrition, water management, and climate resilience to ensure sustainable development outcomes.

The AVENIR Project supports this integrated model by providing training, equipment, and technical guidance, helping beneficiaries strengthen both productivity and resilience.

In Tambacounda, the program has empowered women and youth to become key drivers of change, improving food security and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

Fatoumata’s story is now widely recognized within her community as an example of how targeted support and local engagement can transform livelihoods and strengthen resilience in regions facing food insecurity and climate challenges. (*)
