Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry and UNEP Sign Implementing Arrangement to Strengthen REDD+ Cooperation

Enviro News Asia, Singapore — Kementerian Kehutanan Republik Indonesia and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) officially signed an Implementing Arrangement (IA) on the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) project during the Ecosperity Week event in Singapore on 20 May 2026.

The agreement was signed by Head of the Bureau of Public Relations and International Cooperation (HKLN) Ristianto Pribadi and Director of UNEP’s Climate Change Division Martin Krause. The signing ceremony was also attended by Director of Forest Utilization Business Development (BUPH), Ilham.

The Implementing Arrangement serves as a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024 concerning cooperation in the fields of environment and forestry.

In his remarks, Ristianto Pribadi expressed appreciation for the close and constructive collaboration established between both parties throughout the drafting process of the agreement. He emphasized that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to strengthening REDD+ implementation and advancing climate action initiatives.

Meanwhile, Martin Krause highlighted the strategic role of forests in addressing multiple global challenges simultaneously, including carbon storage, biodiversity protection, community resilience, and climate adaptation.

Through this collaboration, Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry and UNEP will strengthen cooperation in several strategic areas, including technical support for results-based financing mobilization for REDD+, enhancement of carbon market readiness and Article 6 implementation under the Paris Agreement, development of social forestry and community-based enterprises, strengthening forestry sector contributions to greenhouse gas mitigation, as well as reinforcing safeguards and knowledge-based implementation at national and subnational levels.

The Ministry of Forestry stated that the partnership aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to achieving the Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 target and fulfilling its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Both parties expressed optimism that the collaboration will further strengthen efforts to promote high-integrity climate action, sustainable forest governance, and long-term environmental resilience. (*)
