Pertamina and ERIA Strengthen Strategic Partnership on Energy Transition

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — PT Pertamina (Persero) and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia officially strengthened their strategic cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on research collaboration and the development of sustainable energy transition pathways during IPA Convex 2026 in Jakarta on Friday.

The agreement was signed by Pertamina’s Director of Strategic Portfolio and Business Development, Emma Sri Martini, and ERIA Chief Operating Officer Takayuki Yamanaka.

Emma stated that Pertamina remains committed to supporting Indonesia’s national energy independence agenda while simultaneously accelerating the country’s energy transition efforts through strategic partnerships with international institutions and think tanks.

According to her, energy independence and energy transition are two interconnected strategies that strengthen one another and form part of Pertamina’s broader Dual Growth Strategy.

She explained that Pertamina is currently pursuing two major business pillars: optimizing its existing fossil fuel-based energy operations while accelerating the development of low-carbon businesses.

The MoU covers two main areas of cooperation, namely policy and economic analysis in the energy sector, as well as capacity building and knowledge exchange initiatives.

Implementation of the collaboration will be carried out through the Pertamina Energy Institute, which serves as Pertamina’s strategic think tank for energy and sustainability issues.

Emma noted that the partnership with ERIA would provide Pertamina with research-based policy studies, comprehensive energy economic analysis, and institutional capacity strengthening aligned with the company’s long-term business strategy and portfolio development.

She added that the collaboration is expected to strengthen Pertamina’s strategic position in the regional energy landscape amid rapidly evolving global energy transition dynamics.

During the same session, several additional agreements related to carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects were also signed by Pertamina Group entities and strategic partners, including agreements involving PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, Perusahaan Gas Negara, PT Pupuk Indonesia, and ExxonMobil.

ERIA, established in 2007, is an international think tank specializing in economic and policy research across ASEAN and East Asia. The organization is supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and is widely recognized for its expertise in regional energy policy analysis.

As a leading company in Indonesia’s energy transition efforts, PT Pertamina reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s Net Zero Emission target by 2060 and advancing initiatives aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.
