Quezon City’s AI-Based Disaster Alert System Wins Global Climate Award in Italy

Enviro News Asia, Manila — Quezon City’s technology-driven disaster monitoring platform, IRISE UP, has received the Frontline Protection Award at the Planet Aqua City Awards during Venice Climate Week in Italy, earning international recognition for its efforts to strengthen community resilience against climate-related disasters.

The award, presented during the June 3–8 event held in collaboration with C40 Cities, recognizes cities that advance climate adaptation and water resilience through innovative and scalable solutions. The Frontline Protection category specifically honors initiatives that effectively protect communities from the impacts of climate hazards.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said the recognition places the Philippine city among a select group of local governments acknowledged for developing programs that safeguard vulnerable populations from increasingly severe climate risks.

She said the award reflects the efforts of the city government and its partners in creating solutions that prioritize public safety and community welfare as central components of climate action.

The IRISE UP platform, which stands for Intelligent, Resilient, and Integrated Systems for the Urban Population, was developed by the Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO). The system combines artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring technology, and environmental data to improve preparedness and response to climate-related hazards.

According to the city government, the platform integrates automated weather stations, flood sensors, and established community reporting systems. It converts meteorological and environmental information into localized impact-based alerts covering all 142 barangays in Quezon City.

The system enables authorities to implement targeted preparedness measures and conduct preemptive evacuations before disasters strike, enhancing the city’s ability to reduce risks and protect residents.

QCDRRMO head Ma. Bianca Diamante accepted the award on behalf of the city government. Belmonte said the achievement highlights the important role of local governments in addressing climate challenges through science, innovation, and community participation.

She emphasized that strengthening resilience requires the integration of technology and public engagement, adding that Quezon City’s data-driven approach demonstrates how local initiatives can contribute to global climate adaptation efforts.

The recognition comes as cities worldwide face increasing climate threats and seek practical solutions to improve disaster preparedness and protect communities from extreme weather events. (*)
