Appreciation for Conservation Warriors, Forestry Ministry Presents Awards

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — The Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) of the Ministry of Forestry officially launched and promoted the Satya Wanaraksa Award 2025 in Jakarta on May 21, 2025.

The hybrid event was attended by senior officials from the KSDAE, heads of technical implementing units (UPT), forest park managers, as well as conservation partners and practitioners from across Indonesia.

Director General of KSDAE, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, stated in his opening speech that the award is a form of appreciation for the conservation warriors on the ground who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication in protecting and safeguarding conservation areas.

“The complexity and dynamics of challenges in conservation areas demand that managers and field officers continuously innovate and adopt an inclusive mindset, embracing various opportunities for collaboration to address problems at the site level,” said Satyawan in his official statement on Thursday (May 22, 2025).

Satyawan also emphasized the importance of documenting and publishing best practices carried out by field personnel. Many successful field experiences in resolving conflicts or area-related issues remain undocumented in formal records.

“The gap between tangible field achievements and inadequate documentation can pose challenges, especially in today’s work environment which demands formal accountability and validation processes. Many practitioners are highly capable in practice but lack a written track record,” he added.

On this occasion, the Director General also shared a successful conservation case study from Way Kambas National Park, which implemented a Problem-Oriented Policing approach using the SARA model (Scanning–Analysis–Response–Assessment).

This study won the 32nd Herman Goldstein Award in 2024, a prestigious international recognition in the field of problem-solving in public safety.

In closing, the Director General encouraged all conservation warriors to document their work in written form as a contribution to science and history.

“I’d like to quote Pramoedya Ananta Toer: ‘A person can be as clever as he wants, but as long as he doesn’t write, he will be lost in society and from history. Writing is working for eternity,’” he said while officially launching the Satya Wanaraksa Award 2025.

The Satya Wanaraksa Award is expected to become a significant momentum to encourage innovation, collaboration, and documentation of best practices in the protection of conservation areas in Indonesia. *
