Conservation and Protection of Forests Become a Priority in the 2026 Budget

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — The Minister and Deputy Minister of Forestry, along with their staff, attended a Working Meeting with Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Wednesday (Sept 3), to discuss the 2026 Work Plan and Budget (RKA).

In the meeting, Commission IV of the DPR RI heard the Minister of Forestry’s explanation regarding the 2026 budget ceiling amounting to IDR 6,039,285,258,000. This figure represents an increase of IDR 1.105 trillion compared to the 2026 Indicative Ceiling.

On that occasion, Commission IV of the DPR RI also requested that the 2026 work programs of the Ministry of Forestry focus more on efforts to conserve, protect, and secure forests; empower and improve the welfare of communities living in and around forest areas; and make tangible contributions to sustainable forest development.

In its official statement, the Ministry of Forestry affirmed its commitment to carrying out these directives through the 2026 forestry development policy directions, which include:

Forest protection as the lungs of the world and water regulator, including forest rehabilitation and fire prevention;

Equitable forest governance by providing community access to forest management and streamlining permits;

Utilization of forests for food and energy security through the development of agroforestry, multi-forestry enterprises, and downstreaming of forest products;

Implementation of the One Map Policy to reduce land conflicts; and

Digitalization of forestry services as part of governance modernization.

With the approved budget ceiling, the Ministry of Forestry estimates it will be able to encourage investment absorption of up to IDR 21 trillion, create over 400,000 jobs, and support the target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 15 percent from the forestry sector. (*)
