Deforestation Control and Peat Restoration Drive Papua’s Push Toward -140 Million Ton CO₂e Target

Enviro News Asia, Nabire — Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry intensified its sub-national outreach on the Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda in Central Papua, emphasizing deforestation control and peatland restoration as key strategies to achieve the national emission reduction target of -140 million tons CO₂e by 2030.

The hybrid socialization event, held in Nabire, forms part of the preparation of the Sub-National Operational Plan to support climate change mitigation targets in the forestry and land-use sector. Approximately 80 participants attended in person, while around 100 joined online, representing the Central Papua Provincial Government, regional agencies, technical units of the Ministry of Forestry, and other stakeholders.

Head of the Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA Papua) and Chair of the Organizing Committee, Johny Santoso, stated that the program aims to strengthen regional stakeholders’ understanding and translate the National Operational Plan of Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 into a provincial-level operational document. The process will involve a series of three workshops facilitated by the Forum of Indonesian Forestry Higher Education Leaders (FoRETIKA).

During the event, Ruandha Agung Sugardiman, Expert Advisor to the Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 Working Team, delivered remarks on behalf of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Forestry, who serves as Chair of the Operation Management Office (OMO). He reaffirmed that the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector plays a strategic role in meeting Indonesia’s emission reduction target, as stipulated in Minister of Forestry Decree No. 194 of 2025, in line with the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) commitments.

The socialization outlined key strategies under Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030, including:

  • Controlling deforestation and forest degradation
  • Advancing sustainable forest management and social forestry (national target of 12.7 million hectares)
  • Forest and land rehabilitation
  • Peatland restoration
  • Biodiversity conservation
  • Strengthening law enforcement and monitoring systems

Officials also highlighted the importance of spatial data and information systems in planning and implementation. As of 31 December 2025, forest and land fires (karhutla) in Central Papua covered 571 hectares. Mitigation actions encompass 1,060,847 hectares of conservation areas and 39,689,111 hectares of High Conservation Value Areas (HCVAs), totaling 40,749,958 hectares under mitigation coverage.

As a follow-up, the first technical workshop on drafting the Sub-National Operational Plan for Central Papua took place on 12 February 2026, with two additional workshops scheduled to finalize the planning document as a reference for provincial-level implementation.

Through strengthened multi-stakeholder collaboration, the Ministry of Forestry expressed confidence that Central Papua will contribute significantly to achieving Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 target and advancing sustainable low-carbon development. (*)
