Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Vice Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Eddy Soeparno, has been invited to speak at the annual global forum Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where he will present Indonesia’s geothermal energy potential to an international audience.
The forum is organized annually by the Government of the United Arab Emirates and brings together policymakers, climate leaders, and environmental stakeholders from around the world. The event is officially opened by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.
Eddy Soeparno, who also serves as a senior figure in the National Mandate Party (PAN), stated that Indonesia possesses approximately 40 percent of the world’s geothermal potential, making it one of the largest geothermal resource holders globally. However, he noted that the current utilization level remains far below its potential.
The Indonesian government has set a target to add up to 5.2 gigawatts of geothermal power capacity by 2034, as outlined in the latest national electricity supply plan.
According to Eddy, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week provides a strategic platform to expand international cooperation and attract global investors, particularly in renewable energy development, including geothermal projects.
He emphasized that renewable energy development in Indonesia must remain economically attractive to investors while delivering broad benefits, such as creating green jobs, strengthening domestic industries, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
During the event, Eddy is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with key United Arab Emirates officials, including Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, and Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change.
He expressed hope that the series of meetings would contribute to strengthening Indonesia’s national energy resilience agenda under President Prabowo Subianto. (*)
