Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency of Indonesia, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, conducted field monitoring at several rest areas along the Trans-Java Toll Road while promoting a national campaign encouraging waste sorting and a low-waste homecoming travel season.
The monitoring covered rest areas located at KM 57A, KM 102A, KM 166A, KM 287A, KM 338A, KM 379A, and KM 429A, as part of preparations for the annual Eid al-Fitr homecoming travel period. The activity followed directives from the President of Indonesia delivered during the Red and White Cabinet Meeting on March 13, 2026, which emphasized maintaining public comfort during the holiday travel season, including proper waste management.
During the visit, Hanif highlighted the strategic role of rest areas as gathering points for travelers. He said these locations should serve as examples of proper waste management practices and encourage visitors to adopt better habits, including sorting waste and maintaining cleanliness even after returning home.
The minister stressed that waste management is the full responsibility of rest area operators. According to him, operators must ensure that waste generated within their facilities is properly managed, in line with government directives requiring each managed area to handle its own waste.
He also emphasized that the government would conduct regular evaluations with relevant ministries and institutions, noting that Indonesia is facing an increasingly large waste management burden.
The monitoring activity also highlighted cross-sector collaboration to ensure safe and comfortable travel for the public. Hanif noted that several government institutions have contributed to supporting facilities at rest areas, including the Indonesian National Police and the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, which provide security and health services for travelers.
The initiative is aligned with the government’s “Nyaman Bersama” campaign during the Ramadan and Eid holiday period, which aims to ensure safe, comfortable, and smooth travel experiences for the public.
As part of the campaign, the ministry also distributed waste sorting facilities to travelers during the monitoring visit. The effort is intended to encourage environmentally friendly behavior and support the national Communication, Information, and Education (KIE) strategy for waste management in 2026, which promotes public participation, behavioral change, and stronger governance in sustainable waste management.
Through these initiatives, the ministry hopes to build broader public awareness that maintaining cleanliness during the homecoming travel season is a shared responsibility between the government, facility operators, and the community. (*)
