Environment Minister Reaffirms Indonesia’s Commitment to Ending Plastic Pollution at the International INC Forum in Geneva

Enviro News Asia, Geneva – The Ministry of Environment reaffirmed Indonesia’s full commitment to addressing plastic pollution at an international forum.

Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Protection Agency Hanif Faisol Nurofiq conveyed this stance during the Ministerial Roundtable Meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) in Geneva, Switzerland, which discussed global strategies to end plastic pollution as well as the technical, social, and economic challenges faced by various countries.

On this occasion, Minister Hanif expressed his appreciation for the hospitality of the Swiss Government, as well as for the leadership of the UNEP Executive Director, the Chair of the INC, and the Secretariat in advancing the shared mission to end plastic pollution.

“It is an honor to join this panel discussion. Indonesia is concerned that, to date, no significant progress has been made toward achieving a global plastics agreement. Plastic pollution is a serious threat to the environment and human health, requiring immediate, collective, and comprehensive action,” said Minister Hanif, as stated in an official release from the Ministry of Environment on Wednesday (August 13, 2025).

Minister Hanif emphasized the importance of an inclusive and fair negotiation process without coercion, considering that each country has different conditions and challenges.

According to him, developing countries need technology, investment, and financial support from developed nations to enable ambitious actions to address plastic pollution.

“Indonesia supports strengthening bilateral engagement to accelerate the conclusion of a multilateral agreement, with the principle of leaving no one behind. We hope that resolving plastic pollution can be achieved without delay for the sake of protecting the environment and public well-being,” Minister Hanif stressed.

Indonesia is targeting 100 percent waste management, including plastics, by 2029.

This effort covers the elimination of problematic plastics, hazardous chemicals in plastic production, remediation of plastic pollution, and prevention of plastic leakage into the environment.

Minister Hanif also called for concrete measures and strong international support. He stated that solid bilateral and multilateral cooperation is essential to accelerate shared goals.

“What is needed now is concrete action and sustainable solutions to end plastic pollution,” concluded Minister Hanif. (*)
