Free Nutritious Meal Program Accompanied by Environmentally Friendly Waste Management

Enviro News Asia, Bali — The Environmental Control Center (Pusdal LH) of Bali Nusa Tenggara, Bali Region, conducted monitoring visits to several Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG) in Badung and Klungkung Regencies as part of supporting the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) Program. This initiative reaffirms the government’s commitment not only to meet the community’s nutritional needs but also to promote environmentally friendly and sustainable waste management.

In Kuta District, Badung Regency, the SPPG managed by Yayasan Abadhi Mandiri Pangan distributes around 3,281 meal portions per day to 4 integrated health posts (Posyandu), 4 elementary schools, 2 junior high schools, and 1 senior high school. In terms of environmental management, food waste is collected and handed over to third parties for livestock feed. Used cooking oil is processed through collectors, while inorganic waste is managed by the village’s self-managed waste unit.

The commitment of the Kuta SPPG is reflected in its use of reusable serving plates, restrictions on single-use plastics, and efforts to reduce menus that could generate inorganic waste. Pusdal LH Bali encourages stronger communication and coordination to further improve the quality of waste management in the region.

Head of Pusdal LH Bali Nusa Tenggara, Ni Nyoman Santi, stated, “Waste management is a national issue that we must tackle together. In Bali, the closure of landfills has become an important momentum to strengthen waste reduction policies at the upstream level,” as quoted in the official release of the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia.

Ni Nyoman Santi added that the Bali Waste Awareness Movement must start from the smallest units—families, schools, and communities. Every individual has a role in sorting and managing waste from its source, ensuring that Bali remains not only beautiful to behold but also sustainable for future generations.

This visit demonstrates that SPPGs in Bali Province have become examples of integrating nutrition programs with effective environmental management practices. The MBG Program is expected not only to improve public health but also to create positive impacts on environmental sustainability and strengthen the local economy through wiser waste management. (*)
