Global Initiative by UPNVJ’s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences: Research Collaboration with UiTM Malaysia

Enviro News Asia, Selangor — The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ) has expanded its academic collaboration internationally through the signing of an Implementation Agreement with the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies (FKPM) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia. The partnership focuses on joint research examining the influence of language and communication among the Indonesian diaspora in Malaysia.

The visit of FISIP UPNVJ Dean, Dr. S. Bekti Istiyanto, to UiTM Selangor was warmly received by TS. Dr. Noor Mayudia binti Mohd Mothar, Deputy Dean of Academics at FKPM. The meeting resulted in a research collaboration titled “Exploring the Impact of Indonesian Diaspora Language and Communication in Shaping Shared Cultural and Linguistic Heritage among Indonesian Expatriates in Malaysia and Indonesia.”

This cross-country study aims to analyze how language and communication practices among Indonesian diaspora communities help preserve cultural heritage, strengthen linguistic identity, and build social bridges between Indonesians in Malaysia and their homeland.

“This collaboration not only enriches academic understanding of diaspora communication but also strengthens cultural ties and supports sustainable development across Southeast Asia,” said Dr. S. Bekti Istiyanto.

Similarly, TS. Dr. Noor Mayudia reaffirmed FKPM UiTM’s commitment to becoming an active partner through academic exchange programs, joint scientific publications, and community engagement projects involving lecturers and students from both institutions.

The signing of the agreement marks a concrete step toward strengthening educational and cultural diplomacy between Indonesia and Malaysia. This initiative also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11, which emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural diversity and fostering sustainable communities in the face of globalization.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, approximately 1.5 million Indonesian nationals currently reside in Malaysia, the majority as migrant workers. Hence, this research is considered crucial to understanding their cultural identity dynamics while enriching academic discourse in communication, culture, and media studies.

The collaboration between FISIP UPNVJ and FKPM UiTM represents a strategic effort to deepen academic and socio-cultural ties between the two nations, paving the way for broader joint research opportunities across Southeast Asia. (www.upnvj.ac.id)
