Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — The Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) of Indonesia have officially signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) with the Gold Standard Foundation (GSF) to strengthen Indonesia’s carbon market and support the achievement of national climate targets under the Paris Agreement.
The agreement aligns Indonesia’s Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Certification (SPEI) with the internationally recognized Gold Standard for the Global Goals (GS4GG), opening up greater opportunities for national carbon projects to gain global recognition and attract sustainable climate investment.
“This MRA signing is a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Harmonizing the SPEI system with international standards will strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global carbon market,” said Minister of Environment and Head of BPLH, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, in Jakarta on Thursday (May 8, 2025).
Meanwhile, Margaret Kim, CEO of the Gold Standard Foundation, stated that the collaboration will promote carbon projects that not only have a significant impact on emission reductions but also contribute to local community empowerment and sustainable development.
The Gold Standard Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, is well-known for its development of high-integrity emission reduction standards and climate projects.
Through this MRA, carbon projects in Indonesia may gain international recognition, enhance the transparency and integrity of the national certification system, and broaden access to international carbon markets.
This move is also a strategic step toward accelerating the achievement of Indonesia’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
KLH/BPLH and GSF reaffirmed their joint commitment to ensure the effective implementation of the MRA through continuous collaboration, communication, and monitoring.
