Indonesia Ready to Play Active Role at AsiaFlux Conference 2025

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia is set to host the AsiaFlux Conference 2025, scheduled for October 20–25, 2025, in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau. This international forum marks an important milestone for Indonesia in strengthening its commitment to climate change mitigation and sustainable natural resource management.

Carrying the theme “Nature-Based Solutions for Asia: From Advanced Science and Technology to Practices”, the conference will serve as a strategic platform for the Ministry of Environment to bring together scientists, policymakers, and industry leaders in developing Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) aimed at reducing carbon emissions and enhancing ecosystem resilience.

“This conference serves as a platform for scientists, policymakers, and global stakeholders to exchange knowledge, advance flux measurement technologies, and foster collaboration in ecosystem conservation and restoration,”
said Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.

Hanif emphasized that hosting AsiaFlux 2025 in Riau demonstrates Indonesia’s concrete action toward climate change mitigation, particularly in the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector.

“Indonesia’s active role in this conference reflects the government’s seriousness in implementing science-based policies focused on carbon emission reduction and responsible natural resource management,” he added.

The AsiaFlux 2025 Conference is a significant part of Indonesia’s efforts to accelerate the achievement of the FOLU Net Sink 2030 and the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (E-NDC) targets under the Paris Agreement.

Indonesia aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 31.89% through domestic efforts and up to 43.20% with international support by 2030. Of this target, the FOLU sector contributes nearly 60%, or around 140 million tons of CO₂-eq, through improved forest and land management and the application of nature-based solutions.

Hanif further noted that the FOLU sector plays a crucial role as it has substantial potential to absorb emissions through forest conservation, peatland restoration, and sustainable land management.

Scientific Forum and Global Collaboration

The conference will bring together over 350 international participants, including scientists, academics, policymakers, and private sector representatives. Key discussion topics will include carbon dynamics, biosphere-atmosphere interactions, energy and water flux measurement, and sustainable ecosystem modeling.

In addition to plenary sessions and thematic discussions, AsiaFlux 2025 will feature technical training workshops and an exhibition of cutting-edge technologies in carbon and energy flux measurement — essential tools for monitoring and reducing GHG emissions.

“We believe that by bringing together experts from across Asia and beyond, AsiaFlux 2025 will foster new discoveries, strengthen scientific networks, and inspire practical solutions for a sustainable future,”
Minister Hanif stated.

Through cross-sector collaboration — involving government, academia, practitioners, private sector, and civil society — Indonesia hopes the conference will serve as a launching point for science-based policy enhancement and the sustainable management of peatland ecosystems.

“The active involvement of policymakers in supporting research and implementing nature-based solutions will have a significant impact on improving ecosystem quality and achieving national goals under the Paris Agreement,” Hanif concluded.

With a spirit of collaboration and innovation, Indonesia is ready to demonstrate its leadership in global climate change mitigation, strengthen environmental diplomacy, and promote nature-based solutions for a sustainable planet. (*)
