Indonesia–South Korea Strengthen Strategic Collaboration on Green Energy Business

Enviro News Asia, Seoul — Indonesia and South Korea have agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation in the green energy sector amid rising geopolitical tensions and global energy uncertainties. The agreement marks a significant step toward rqaeinforcing energy security and accelerating the transition to clean energy in both countries.

The commitment was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, and South Korea’s Minister of Climate, Energy, and Environment, Kim Sungwhan.

The announcement followed a bilateral meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at the Blue House in Seoul.

Minister Bahlil emphasized that the MoU serves as a foundation for both countries to accelerate the development of renewable energy based on their respective capacities. He highlighted that the partnership should not be delayed, given the urgency of transitioning to cleaner energy sources.

The agreement covers a wide range of strategic sectors, including renewable energy development such as solar, wind, and geothermal, as well as future energy technologies like nuclear and hydrogen. It also includes cooperation in energy storage systems, energy efficiency, bioenergy, and waste-to-energy solutions.

In addition, both countries will promote the development of supporting infrastructure, including smart grids, electric vehicle charging stations, and integrated battery industries from upstream production to recycling.

Minister Bahlil noted that the long-standing relationship between Indonesia and South Korea provides a strong foundation for mutually beneficial collaboration, leveraging Indonesia’s abundant natural resources and South Korea’s advanced industrial and technological capabilities.

President Prabowo underscored the importance of maintaining strong bilateral relations in an increasingly uncertain global environment, stating that Indonesia remains open to expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

President Lee also reaffirmed South Korea’s commitment, noting that Indonesia plays a stable and strategic role as a key energy supplier, particularly in liquefied natural gas (LNG) and coal.

The cooperation is expected to facilitate technology transfer, boost investment, and enhance human resource development, while supporting Indonesia’s broader goal of achieving energy independence and sustainability. (*)
