Journalists Play a Vital Role in the Success of FOLU Net Sink 2030, APP Group Strengthens Commitment to Sustainable Forest Management

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Dr. Agus Justianto, Senior Advisor to the Indonesia FOLU Net Sink 2030 Task Force, emphasized the critical role of journalists in advancing Indonesia’s major agenda to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the Forestry and Other Land Use (FOLU) sector.

Speaking on the second day of the Journalist Workshop on Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 at the Rumpin Nursery in Bogor on Saturday (May 17, 2025), Agus stressed that the success of the FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda does not solely rely on government policies or technical support.

He underlined that the agenda’s success largely depends on the ability to build widespread public understanding.

“Journalists are the bridge between policy complexity and public awareness,” said Agus.

“Through strong and accurate narratives, the media can highlight inspiring field stories, portray real challenges, and raise public consciousness for climate action,” he added.

Agus emphasized that positive narratives do not mean ignoring challenges, but rather spotlighting hope and encouraging collective behavioral change.

“Collaboration is key. Government, civil society, the private sector, and the media must walk together—not only sharing information but also sharing responsibility,” he continued.

Responding to the government’s call to involve the private sector in supporting national FOLU Net Sink 2030 targets, Iwan Setiawan, Deputy Director of Corporate Strategy & Relations at APP Group, reaffirmed the company’s commitment.

“The sustainable forest management initiatives undertaken by APP Group are designed to ensure that carbon absorption in the forestry sector exceeds emissions by 2030,” said Iwan Setiawan.

“This effort aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to tackling global climate change,” he explained.

APP Group has implemented several strategic programs, including responsible peatland management through LiDAR-based topographic mapping, the development of native peatland species, and an integrated fire management system that successfully reduced fire incidents by 90.6% in DMPA program villages by 2024.

The company is also actively involved in mangrove restoration and supports 12 mitigation action directives of FOLU Net Sink 2030 in five operational provinces, covering deforestation prevention, sustainable peatland management, and conservation area protection.

“The success of Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030 relies on synergy and collaboration among all stakeholders, including the private sector,” Iwan added.

“APP Group is ready and committed to contribute through sustainable forest plantation management and community empowerment,” he concluded. *
