Enviro News Asia, Paju — The Korea Forest Service, led by Park Eunsik, in collaboration with the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization, organized a commemorative event for the International Day of Forests 2026 to promote the economic and environmental value of forests.
The event took place in the Demilitarized Zone forest area in Paju, South Korea, bringing together around 100 participants, including foreign ambassadors from 13 countries, government officials, young foresters, and university students.
Organizers aimed to raise global awareness of the role of forests in addressing climate change and supporting economic growth, in line with this year’s theme, “Forests and Economies,” designated by the United Nations.
During the event, participants engaged in discussions and presentations highlighting forest-based sustainable economies and international cooperation. Young foresters showcased initiatives such as forest-related economic activities and youth woodworking programs, while ambassadors shared insights into their countries’ forest resources and economic contributions.
The program also featured a video presentation on the economic value of forests and examples of international collaboration. Participants took part in experiential activities, including exploring the DMZ forest, tasting food products derived from forest resources, and engaging in woodworking sessions, which illustrated the diverse benefits of forests for local economies, culture, and industry.
Minister Park emphasized that forests play a critical role in tackling the climate crisis while supporting economic development. He encouraged the public to reflect on the importance of forests and participate in national tree-planting efforts ahead of Arbor Day.
The event highlighted the importance of strengthening international partnerships and promoting sustainable forest management as part of global efforts to build resilient and inclusive green economies. (*)
