Microsoft Encouraged to Increase Technology and AI Investment in Indonesia

Enviro News Asia, Redmond — Efforts to strengthen Indonesia’s digital ecosystem received new momentum as the Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, paid an official visit to the headquarters of Microsoft Corp. in Redmond, Washington. The meeting underscored Indonesia’s commitment to expanding strategic collaboration with the global technology giant, particularly in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), data centers, and a sustainable digital economy.

Microsoft, a multinational technology company established in 1975, recorded assets of US$ 635 billion as of September 2025 and revenues of US$ 282 billion by June 2025. The company is widely recognized for its product portfolio, including Windows, Microsoft 365, Azure, Xbox, and LinkedIn, as well as its cloud and AI services that have become key drivers of global digital transformation.

In Indonesia, Microsoft has announced a major investment totaling US$ 1.7 billion for the 2024–2028 period. The investment focuses on the development of data center infrastructure and AI facilities in Cikarang, West Java, the expansion of “Indonesia Central,” and the enhancement of Azure services. Over the same four-year period, Microsoft aims to train one million Indonesian digital talents in technology and artificial intelligence. This initiative is projected to generate an estimated US$ 15.2 billion in new economic value and create more than 106,000 jobs.

During the meeting with Microsoft executives, Ambassador Indroyono emphasized the importance of strengthening Indonesia’s digital capacity, including the increased adoption of AI across various sectors. He expressed appreciation for the Elevate program, which employs the Train the Trainers method, enabling broader training outreach through local facilitators.

The Ambassador also urged Microsoft to expand its investment in Indonesia, particularly in the development of additional data centers, the use of sustainable energy for data center operations, and enhanced cybersecurity cooperation with government ministries and institutions. With the issuance of Indonesia’s national carbon trading policy, the country also hopes that Microsoft will broaden its carbon offset programs in collaboration with local partners.

Indonesia currently has a strategic document known as the “Indonesia Digital Vision 2045,” which serves as the foundation for national AI ecosystem development. Continued collaboration with Microsoft is expected to accelerate the realization of this vision while strengthening Indonesia’s position as a key player in the global digital economy. (*)
