Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq officially inaugurated 225 members from 21 Cipinang River Care Communities, spanning from upstream to downstream areas. This initiative marks an important step in strengthening collaboration between communities, the government, and the private sector to maintain river cleanliness and sustainability in urban areas.
The formation of these communities follows Article 160 of Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021 on Environmental Protection and Management, which emphasizes the active role of the public in maintaining water quality. Based on Ministerial Decree No. 2530 of 2025, the Cipinang River Care Communities are mandated to conduct river clean-ups, plant vegetation along riverbanks, educate residents, and monitor potential sources of pollution.
Minister Hanif underlined the importance of the communities as drivers of change at the grassroots level.
“All communities entrusted with this responsibility must seriously initiate and educate all residents along the riverbanks to collectively prevent and tackle waste dumping into the river. That is the first and most crucial step,” said Minister Hanif.
As part of the government’s tangible support, community activities will be coordinated with state-owned enterprises (BUMN) responsible for four river segments:
- PT Perusahaan Gas Negara in Segment I
- PT PLN Indonesia Power in Segment II
- PT Vale Indonesia in Segment III
- PT Aneka Tambang (Antam) in Segment IV
Following the inauguration, the event continued with a river clean-up along the Cipinang River from upstream to downstream, involving all river care communities and employees from the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Management Agency (BPLH). The activity served as a symbolic start of a national movement to protect rivers as vital ecosystems and sources of life.
Minister Hanif emphasized that this movement will not stop at the Cipinang River but will inspire river management efforts across Indonesia, including the Ciliwung, Citarum, Brantas, and Mahakam rivers.
“The Indonesian nation is not only capable of building cities and skyscrapers but also of keeping its rivers clean and flowing,” concluded Minister Hanif. (*)
