Minister Yumaklı Highlights Protection of 1.2 Million Hectares of Wetlands in Türkiye

Enviro News Asia, Ankara — Türkiye’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting wetlands as vital ecosystems, stating that the country is working to ensure the sustainability of natural life through the conservation of 138 wetlands covering a total area of 1.2 million hectares.

In a statement marking World Wetlands Day, Minister Yumaklı emphasized that wetlands are among nature’s most sensitive and valuable ecosystems, providing water, supporting soil health, and serving as habitats for thousands of plant and animal species.

“On the occasion of World Wetlands Day, we continue our efforts to safeguard natural life through the protection of 138 wetlands spanning 1.2 million hectares across our country,” Yumaklı said. “Protecting wetlands means safeguarding not only today, but also the future. This natural heritage is a shared responsibility for all of us.”

The minister underlined that wetlands play a critical role in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and ecological balance, and stressed that their preservation remains a national priority within Türkiye’s broader environmental and sustainability agenda. (*)
