Enviro News Asia, Bandung – The Ministry of Environment (KLH) sealed the final waste disposal site (TPA) of Caringin Main Market, Bandung, on Monday, February 10, 2025. This action was taken because the site was covering waste with soil, which was considered to cause environmental pollution.
The Director of Administrative Sanctions at the Ministry of Environment, Ari Prasetia, stated that the sealing of the Caringin Market landfill was based on complaints from the public regarding the waste accumulation. The market management was deemed to have failed in managing waste, leading to previous sanctions imposed by the Bandung City Government.
“This sealing is carried out because the market management violated Law No. 18 concerning waste management,” said Ari after sealing the landfill of Caringin Market, Monday, February 10, 2025.
Ari explained that burying waste with soil could cause environmental pollution and pose health risks to the surrounding community, as the market is located near residential areas. “The waste should be processed, not simply piled up and buried like this,” said Ari.
The Head of the Bandung City Environmental Agency (DLH), Dudy Prayudi, stated that his office had previously imposed three sanctions on Caringin Main Market management due to its failure in waste management. These sanctions, he said, were based on directions from KLH. “The first is to clear the accumulated waste, approximately 4,000 cubic meters, within 14 working days. Secondly, they must submit environmental documents, as Caringin Market currently does not have any,” he said.
According to him, Caringin Main Market lacks environmental documentation because it has been operating since before the enactment of Law No. 32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management. The third sanction requires the market management to conduct socialization and education on waste processing.
When confirmed, the Head of Sanitation at Caringin Main Market, Yudi, said that they are currently working on obtaining the environmental documents requested by KLH. In addition to the environmental documents, they are also processing the Environmental Management Statement Letter (SPPL).
Yudi mentioned that the daily waste accumulation at Caringin Market could reach up to 48 tons. However, only 18 tons can be transported to the Sarimukti landfill due to limited transport capacity.
Therefore, Yudi revealed that Caringin Market is currently working on an independent waste management solution. One of the steps being taken is the establishment of an integrated waste processing site (TPST).
