Ministry of Environment Seals Two Environmentally Unfriendly Companies

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Ministry of Environment has sealed off two companies located on the slopes of Mount Salak, Bogor Regency, due to environmental violations.

Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, stated that the recent floods in the Puncak Bogor area were a consequence of unauthorized developments in the upstream region of the Cibadak River.

On Saturday, March 22, 2025, the ministry, through the Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement, sealed and temporarily halted the operations of two companies—PT Bahana Sukma Sejahtera (BSS) and PT Amoda (Awan Hills)—located on the slopes of Mount Salak, Cijeruk District, Bogor Regency.

“These two business activities have been identified as the main causes of slope degradation and the increase in sediment-laden water flow into the river,” said Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.

Based on field verification conducted by KLH, violations were found that contributed to flooding, landslides, and the degradation of the watershed (DAS) area.

PT BSS was found to be clearing nearly 40 hectares of land for an ecotourism project. The construction of a 1.5-kilometer-long, 10-meter-wide road was allegedly carried out without the necessary environmental documents or business permits. Additionally, the company failed to manage surface runoff from the cleared land, increasing the risk of erosion and mudflows into the river.

Meanwhile, PT Amoda, or Awan Hills, was developing cabin-style hotels on steep slopes without environmental approval. The access road built for this project directly connects to PT BSS’s road. The total cleared land area reached 1.35 hectares, with strong indications of landslides occurring at multiple points near the Cibadak River’s water source.

According to Hanif, these violations not only indicate a failure to comply with permit regulations but also pose a significant threat to the upstream ecosystem, which is crucial for flood control and clean water availability downstream.

“Unauthorized developments and environmental negligence are not just administrative violations—they are a real threat to public safety and environmental sustainability,” he stressed.
