Enviro News Asia, Jakarta –A joint rescue team has successfully evacuated the body of Juliana Marins (JDSP), a tourist from Brazil who fell into a ravine on the trail leading to the summit of Mount Rinjani, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
The Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia expressed its condolences and deep sorrow over the passing of Juliana Marins.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Forestry, we express our condolences and deep sympathy for the passing of Juliana Marins, a climber from Brazil.
We also extend our gratitude to the entire joint team who worked tirelessly in the field,” said Satyawan Pudyatmoko, Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE), in a statement on Thursday (June 26, 2025).
It was previously reported that Juliana’s body was located at the bottom of a ravine approximately 600 meters deep. During the evacuation, the joint SAR team had to carry the body up to Pelawangan, one of the safe points along the hiking trail, before bringing it back down to Sembalun.
The evacuation was carried out to the fullest extent using various methods, from rappelling techniques to attempts with helicopter flights. However, the joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team faced several obstacles, including difficult terrain and frequent adverse weather conditions.
“Despite the challenges posed by the weather and rough terrain, the evacuation was conducted to the best of our ability, and thankfully, the operation was successfully completed,” he added.
According to a report from Yarman, Head of Mount Rinjani National Park (TNGR), the victim was retrieved from the ravine at 1:51 PM local time on Wednesday. The body was then taken to the Sembalun Resort to be handed over to the family and subsequently transported to Bhayangkara Hospital in West Nusa Tenggara.
Satyawan also urged all hikers to prioritize safety and ensure proper preparation for their climbs. The Ministry of Forestry will continue improving facilities and infrastructure. “To all climbers, please be cautious while hiking — prioritize your safety, safety first,” said Satyawan.(*)
