Indonesia Pushes Acceleration of Regional Greenhouse Gas Inventory Reporting

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Ministry of Environment is intensifying Indonesia’s efforts to tackle climate change.

One of the key steps is organizing a Capacity-Building Workshop on Regional Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory Reporting and Subnational Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), held on August 19–22, 2025, in Jakarta.

The event, hosted by the Deputy for Climate Change Control and Carbon Economic Value Governance (PPITKNEK) of the Ministry of Forestry and Environment, aligns with the latest report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

According to WMO, 2024 was the hottest year on record, with global average temperatures reaching 1.55°C.

It also projects that annual temperature increases in 2025–2029 will range from 1.2°C to 1.9°C.

This alarming trend has urged Paris Agreement member countries, including Indonesia, to raise their greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction ambitions.

PPITKNEK Deputy Ary Sudijanto emphasized in his remarks that the GHG inventory serves as the foundation of Indonesia’s climate mitigation strategy.

“This inventory is not merely an administrative process, but the cornerstone for shaping Indonesia’s climate policies. Accurate, transparent, and consistent data will accelerate the achievement of national emission reduction targets,” Ary stated in the Ministry’s official release.

As part of this commitment, Indonesia has raised its emission reduction targets in its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)—from 29% to 31.89% through domestic efforts, and from 41% to 43.20% with international support.

The Ministry has also developed the National GHG Inventory System (SIGN-SMART), a web-based platform that facilitates synchronization of emission data among central and regional governments as well as private sector actors.

Designed in line with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) methodologies, the system can be broadly accessed at both national and international levels.

Director of GHG Inventory and MRV, Mitta Ratna Djuwita, added, “Through this program, we provide technical guidance so that emission reporting at the provincial and district/city levels can be timelier, better synchronized, and accountable, in line with TACCC principles—Transparency, Accuracy, Completeness, and Consistency.”

Over three days, participants from across Indonesia received assistance in compiling GHG inventory reports, applying Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), and integrating them into the National Registry System (SRN).

Through this capacity-building effort, the Ministry of Environment expects subnational GHG inventory reporting to improve in quality, thereby supporting Indonesia’s national targets in curbing global warming. (*)
