New Import Tariffs, Indonesia Maintains Communication with the United States and ASEAN

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Indonesian government continues to maintain communication with the United States (US) and coordinate with ASEAN in response to the newly imposed US import tariffs affecting almost all countries, including Indonesia.

According to a press statement from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Thursday (April 3, 2025), Indonesia will send a high-level delegation to Washington DC for direct negotiations with the US government.

“As part of the negotiations, the Indonesian government has prepared a number of measures to address the concerns raised by the US government, particularly those outlined in the 2025 National Trade Estimate (NTE) report published by the US Trade Representative,” the statement said.

At the ASEAN level, Indonesia has also been in communication with Malaysia, which holds the ASEAN Chairmanship this year, to coordinate a collective regional response, given that all 10 ASEAN member states are affected by the US tariffs, though to varying degrees.

Among ASEAN countries, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia are subject to import tariffs of 49 percent, 46 percent, 36 percent, and 24 percent respectively.

Earlier, on Wednesday (April 2, 2025), US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of import tariffs on nearly all countries exporting goods to the US, including trade partners.

Trump decided that Indonesia would be subject to a “reciprocal tariff” of 32 percent, based on a 10 percent base tariff now applied to all countries under the new rules. The US accuses Indonesia of levying a 64 percent tariff on US products.

The base tariff of 10 percent will take effect on April 5, while the reciprocal US tariff will be implemented on April 9, 2025.
