Pertamina Develops Jet Fuel Project from Used Cooking Oil

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Pertamina, through its subsidiaries PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) and PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, is currently developing a project titled Used Cooking Oil to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (USAF), which produces jet fuel from used cooking oil.

The USAF project has already been initiated at the Cilacap Refinery and will soon expand to the Dumai and Balongan Refineries. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to embrace environmentally friendly new and renewable energy (NRE).

Through the synergy of its subsidiaries—PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) and PT Pertamina Patra Niaga—Pertamina is supporting the national agenda for energy transition, while simultaneously advancing a dual growth strategy: strengthening its core business and expanding into new business areas.

“This USAF project is tangible proof of Pertamina’s commitment not only to maintaining national energy security but also to developing a sustainable low-carbon energy portfolio,” said KPI President Director Taufik Aditiyawarman after the signing of the USAF development commitment at Grha Pertamina, Jakarta, on Monday (May 26, 2025).

In an official statement, Taufik Aditiyawarman stated that the Used Cooking Oil to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (USAF) project is a highly relevant initiative towards the adoption of environmentally friendly new and renewable energy (NRE).

The project is supported by the issuance of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 4 of 2025.

Through this project, KPI will process used cooking oil into jet fuel, and Patra Niaga will explore business opportunities to ensure that USAF is widely and commercially used.

Taufik added that the USAF project is not merely about producing sustainable fuel, but is also part of a larger blueprint for a circular SAF ecosystem—building a robust supply chain in collaboration with used cooking oil collectors, transporters, and off-takers such as airlines and state-owned aviation companies.

Acting President Director of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Mars Ega Legowo Putra, stated that the collaboration between KPI and PT Pertamina Patra Niaga in developing USAF represents a historic partnership for both Pertamina and Indonesia.

The program is in line with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision, particularly in the area of energy independence.

Meanwhile, PT Pertamina (Persero) President Director Simon Aloysius Mantiri expressed his appreciation to the management and all Pertamina employees for the signing of the development commitment for the Used Cooking Oil (UCO) to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiative.

According to him, the USAF project is a response to global challenges, addressing energy security, affordability for the public, and environmental sustainability simultaneously. *
