Planting Ideas, Growing Solutions: Indonesia Cultivates Green Economic Diplomacy at the World Bank

The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Washington, D.C. reaffirmed Indonesia’s strong commitment to advancing green economic diplomacy and sustainable development through its support for the seminar “Plantation 360: Unlocking Jobs, Innovation, and Climate-Smart Growth.”

Held at the World Bank Headquarters, the event was organized by the Office of the Executive Director for the Southeast Asia Group (EDS16) in collaboration with the Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC), as part of the 2025 World Bank–IMF Annual Meetings.

In his remarks, Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, underlined the strategic role of the palm oil sector in creating jobs, fostering innovation, and driving climate-smart and inclusive green growth.

“The palm oil industry is not merely about producing vegetable oil, it’s about empowering people and shaping the future of a greener economy,” said Ambassador Indroyono. “Through innovation and sustainable practices, palm oil can continue to be a positive force creating quality jobs, strengthening inclusion, and contributing meaningfully to global climate solutions.”

The seminar introduced the “Plantation 360” concept, which takes a holistic view of the palm oil industry encompassing its economic, social, and environmental dimensions. Speakers explored how digital technology, traceability systems, biotechnology, and fintech for smallholders can boost productivity and transparency while enhancing competitiveness in a global market increasingly driven by sustainability.

Panel discussions also highlighted the importance of downstream innovation, palm-based renewable energy, and the empowerment of smallholder farmers and women workers. The approach aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita vision to position Indonesia as the world’s sustainable bioeconomy hub or, as several participants noted, “the green powerhouse of the future.”

“Indonesia continues to demonstrate leadership in advancing sustainable palm oil,” Ambassador Indroyono added. “Through ISPO certification, zero-deforestation policies, and climate-smart agriculture, we ensure that economic growth and environmental responsibility grow hand in hand.”

The event served as fertile ground for strengthening collaboration between producer and consumer countries, international financial institutions, the private sector, and research organizations. By broadening understanding of palm oil’s positive contributions to inclusive development, Indonesia aims to cultivate a more balanced global perception of the commodity and promote fair, sustainable trade partnerships.

Concluding the event, Ambassador Indroyono emphasized the Embassy’s active role in advancing strategic dialogue and green cooperation with partners in the United States and beyond. He reiterated that through agricultural and green economic diplomacy, Indonesia seeks to lay the foundations for sustainability and a greener future for both its people and the planet. (*)
