PLN Operates Second Circuit of Pangkalan Brandan–Langsa Transmission Line, Strengthening Power Reliability in Aceh

Enviro News Asia, Aceh Tamiang PT PLN (Persero) has successfully commissioned the second circuit of the 150-kilovolt (kV) Pangkalan Brandan–Langsa transmission line on Tuesday (December 30, 2025), further reinforcing the reliability of electricity supply to Aceh following severe floods and landslides that disrupted the Sumatra power system.

The operation of the second circuit complements the first line that has been in service and marks a crucial milestone in restoring and strengthening the Sumatra–Aceh interconnection. With both circuits now fully operational, the electricity supply to Aceh is expected to be more stable and resilient against potential disturbances.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that the commissioning of this strategic transmission line forms an integral part of post-disaster power system recovery and long-term transmission infrastructure strengthening, particularly to enhance grid reliability in Aceh.

“In line with government directives, PLN is committed to delivering a more reliable electricity system to support community recovery efforts in Aceh after the disaster. The operation of the Pangkalan Brandan–Langsa second circuit is a vital step in restoring the power system and reinforcing post-disaster transmission infrastructure so that electricity supply to Aceh becomes increasingly reliable,” Darmawan said.

He added that the achievement was made possible through close collaboration between PLN teams and various stakeholders on the ground.

“Cross-sector synergy is the key to accelerating field operations. We appreciate the support of local governments, the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police, and community members who assisted PLN teams throughout each stage of the work,” he noted.

General Manager of PLN’s Sumatra Transmission and Load Dispatch Unit (UIP3B), Amiruddin, explained that the operation of the second circuit aims to strengthen the overall system and minimize the risk of future disruptions.

“The full operation of the Pangkalan Brandan–Langsa transmission line reinforces the Aceh–Sumatra interconnection. With a layered system in place, power flow stability can be maintained more effectively while anticipating potential disturbances going forward,” Amiruddin said.

Previously, PLN had also commissioned the second circuit of the Arun–Bireuen transmission line, completing the first circuit already in operation. These strategic transmission projects are part of a broader effort to restore Aceh’s power system after the disaster, particularly on the transmission side as a critical backbone of electricity supply.

Amiruddin added that strengthening the Aceh–Sumatra interconnection is not only aimed at post-disaster recovery but also serves as a foundation to ensure sustainable electricity supply for communities, vital facilities, and regional economic activities.

Meanwhile, Aceh Deputy Governor Fadhlullah expressed appreciation for PLN’s efforts in restoring and reinforcing Aceh’s electricity system.

“On behalf of the Aceh Provincial Government, we extend our appreciation to PLN for its continuous efforts to restore and strengthen the reliability of Aceh’s electricity supply. Reliable electricity is essential to support daily community activities, public services, and regional economic recovery,” Fadhlullah said. (*)
