Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) are increasingly in demand by the industrial sector in Indonesia. PT PLN (Persero), through PLN’s Riau and Riau Islands Main Distribution Unit (UID), has once again distributed 592 REC units, equivalent to 592 Megawatt hours (MWh) of green electricity, to PT Inecda Plantation, a palm oil industry company in Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau Province.
REC is PLN’s green product innovation that ensures the transparent use of Renewable Energy (EBT) and is internationally recognized. Each REC certifies that the electricity used by customers originates from renewable or non-fossil power plants, with tracking ensured by the APX Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGRs) system from the United States, which guarantees compliance with international standards.
In a press release received on Wednesday (March 5, 2025), PLN stated that as a pioneer in Indonesia’s energy transition, it remains committed to providing green electricity sourced from renewable energy plants. This effort aims to support the competitiveness of Indonesia’s industrial sector, which serves as the backbone of the national economy.
General Manager of PLN UID Riau and Riau Islands, Tonny Bellamy, explained that the industrial sector’s adoption of REC contributes to achieving the Net Zero Emission target by 2060.
“Through REC, customers can participate in reducing emissions by transitioning from dirty energy to environmentally friendly energy. We are committed to providing clean energy to support the development of a green industry in Indonesia,” Tonny said.
He added that REC is a PLN product available for purchase by both individuals and companies using electricity from renewable energy sources. Each REC unit is equivalent to 1 MWh of green electricity.
“We are committed to meeting all customer needs, including providing electricity from renewable sources. We are ready to support collaborations among various parties to reduce global carbon emissions, including our partnership with Inecda Plantation,” Tonny stated.
General Manager of PT Inecda Plantation, Khamdi, affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting green energy use to reduce carbon emissions.
“We hope that this collaboration with PLN will continue, bringing positive impacts through business practices that prioritize sustainability principles and implement Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) aspects to achieve sustainable development and support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Khamdi said.
