Successfully Managing Sustainable Forests, Perhutani Earns FSC-FM Certificate

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Perum Perhutani has once again successfully obtained the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certificate, which was renewed on January 30, 2025, for Forest Management (FSC-FM). This certification reaffirms the company’s commitment to sustainable forest management, covering 57 Forest Management Units (Kesatuan Pemangkuan Hutan/KPH). The certification was granted by SGS Société Générale de Surveillance SA, an international certification body, and is valid from January 29, 2025, to May 18, 2026.

The certificate, numbered SGSCH-FM/COC-010716, confirms that Perhutani meets the sustainable forest management standards in accordance with FSC-STD-IDN-02.1-2020. The scope of the certification includes the management of plantation forests on Java Island for the production of roundwood, pine resin, energy wood, and eucalyptus leaves.

Perum Perhutani’s President Director, Wahyu Kuncoro, stated that this achievement is the result of the company’s hard work and commitment to implementing sustainable forest management principles.

“We are proud to receive FSC certification, which serves as global recognition of our efforts to maintain ecological, social, and economic balance in forest management. This also serves as motivation for us to continuously improve responsible forestry practices,” said Wahyu in Perhutani’s press release.

“This historic milestone presents a great opportunity to expand FSC certification, not only for timber and forest products but also for other forest-based products such as carbon, environmental services (water and tourism), and non-timber forest products like coffee,” Wahyu added.

Furthermore, Wahyu emphasized that Perhutani also sees significant potential for its subsidiaries to obtain FSC certification according to their respective business fields. This initiative will strengthen the sustainable supply chain within Perhutani’s business ecosystem, enhance competitiveness, and add value to all entities within the group.

By obtaining this FSC-FM certificate, Perhutani is expected to gain various strategic benefits, including:

  1. Access to Premium Markets – FSC-certified products have higher market value and are more easily accepted in export markets and by customers who require sustainability certification.
  2. Enhanced Corporate Reputation – FSC certification demonstrates Perhutani’s compliance with environmentally, socially, and economically responsible forest management standards.
  3. Support for Sustainability – The implementation of FSC standards ensures that forests are managed sustainably, preserving biodiversity and benefiting local communities.
  4. Competitive Advantage – Perhutani can expand its customer base, particularly in industries that prioritize sustainable supply chains, such as furniture, gum rosin, and construction.

This certification signifies that Perhutani has successfully implemented forest management standards that are environmentally friendly, socially responsible, and economically viable.

Wahyu Kuncoro reiterated Perhutani’s commitment to continuous innovation in forest management to support environmental sustainability, improve community welfare, and adhere to global sustainability standards.
