University of Hawaiʻi Explore AI-Based ENSO Research to Improve El Niño 2026 Forecasting

Enviro News Asia, Honolulu – Researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa presented their latest findings on El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), tropical-extratropical interactions, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in climate prediction during a meeting with Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Indroyono Soesilo and the Indonesian Embassy delegation on July 8.

The discussion focused on the relevance of the research to Indonesia, where El Niño frequently brings prolonged dry seasons and reduced rainfall, particularly across Java, Nusa Tenggara, and eastern Indonesia. Scientists emphasized that understanding the type and intensity of El Niño is as important as predicting its occurrence because different ENSO patterns produce different regional impacts.
