Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Rector of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta (UPNVJ), Prof. Dr. Anter Venus, MA, Comm, officially opened the 2025 Introduction to Campus Life Program for New Students (PKKMB) at the Senayan Indoor Tennis Court, Jakarta, on Monday, August 11, 2025. More than 4,800 new students attended the event.
In his remarks, Prof. Venus stated that gaining admission to UPNVJ is no easy feat, as the passing grade is relatively high. He mentioned that the average entrance selection score this year was 627.
“So, those of you who made it into UPNVJ fall into only two categories: smart people and very smart people,” said Venus, drawing enthusiastic applause from the new students.
Prof. Venus went on to explain the university’s full name—Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta, or more commonly known as UPNVJ. According to him, three key words are embedded in the name.
First, “Pembangunan” (Development), which signifies that students are tasked with improving and advancing conditions, not causing damage.
Second, “Nasional” (National), reflecting graduates’ readiness to serve throughout Indonesia for the benefit of the nation and state.
Third, “Veteran,” which denotes that the university was founded by independence fighters who now continue the struggle against ignorance and poverty through education.
The Rector also shared a brief history of UPNVJ, from the establishment of several academies in 1963, their merger into the Akademi Pembangunan Nasional Veteran in 1967, to its renaming as Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta on November 30, 1977—a date commemorated as the university’s anniversary. UPNVJ gained the status of a public university in 2014.
He emphasized that UPNVJ upholds a “Defending the Nation” identity, expressed through its anthem, curriculum, courses, and various student activities.
The university’s motto, Widya Mwat Yasa—which means “learning to build”—serves as a guide for students to produce works that benefit society and the nation.
The Rector also revealed that nearly 40 percent of UPNVJ’s study programs are now rated “excellent” in accreditation.
“More than 50 percent of our undergraduate programs have received international accreditation, and the process of internationalization is progressing rapidly,” he stated during the opening of PKKMB, also known as PATRIBERA (Patriot Bela Negara). (www.upnvj.ac.id)
