World Environment Day 2025: PLN Cleans Up Waste at 56 Locations Across Indonesia

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) held a waste clean-up activity as part of its “Zero Waste Warriors” program.

The event was officially launched in Kampung Mandalajaya, Segarajaya Village, Tarumajaya District, Bekasi Regency, on Thursday (June 12, 2025), marking the start of simultaneous actions at 56 locations across Indonesia.

Zero Waste Warriors is part of PLN’s Employee Volunteering Program, encouraging employees to take direct action in environmental preservation.

A total of 12,795 employees from the PLN Group participated in the initiative, engaging in waste collection and community education activities.

Sayid Muhadhar, Director of Coastal and Marine Pollution and Damage Control at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, expressed his appreciation for PLN’s initiative in promoting multisector collaboration for environmental conservation.

“I sincerely thank PLN for acknowledging World Environment Day. Let us use this moment as a catalyst for real action—through simple steps like reducing plastic bag use, sorting waste, and supporting recycling programs. The Earth doesn’t need us; we are the ones who need the Earth,” said Sayid in PLN’s official release.

Sayid went on to highlight that currently around 54% of waste in Indonesia ends up unmanaged in the environment. “I’d like to invite everyone present today, especially the many Gen Z and Gen Alpha individuals here, to be part of the solution and pioneers of low-waste, plastic-free lifestyles,” he said.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo emphasized that PLN’s responsibility goes beyond providing reliable electricity—it also involves playing an active role in protecting the environment.

“The Zero Waste Warriors program is a tangible expression of PLN’s commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, while also encouraging communities to care more about environmental sustainability and the future of our planet,” said Darmawan.

Meanwhile, PLN’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Communication and CSR, Gregorius Adi Trianto, explained that this year’s initiative focused on three main campaigns: Clean Up, Bottle Up, and Green Action, aimed at reducing waste accumulation, particularly plastic waste.

All collected waste is sorted into organic and inorganic categories, as well as by high-value and low-value materials.

Rather than being discarded, the waste is managed by local partners and repurposed into economically valuable products, such as plastic furniture, bricks, and handicrafts.

“We aim to create added value from waste so it can be reused and provide economic benefits to surrounding communities. This is a real example of the circular economy we are promoting,” Gregorius concluded. (*)
