Local Environmental Champion Wins Yogyakarta Award

Enviro News Asia, Sleman — Riyanta, a community environmental activist supported by a joint corporate social responsibility programme run by PT Pelayaran Bahtera Adhiguna (BAg) and PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), has won the 2026 Kalpataru Adya Award in the Environmental Development category in Yogyakarta.

The award was presented on Nov. 4 at the Bima Hall of SMK Negeri 2 Depok in Sleman, recognising Riyanta’s efforts to promote community-based waste management and integrated agriculture in Jomblang Tengah hamlet, Karangasem village, Ponjong district, Gunungkidul.

The achievement builds on the community’s earlier recognition as a Climate-Resilient Hamlet at the Yogyakarta provincial level in June 2026.

Through their corporate social and environmental responsibility (TJSL) partnership, BAg and PLN EPI have supported Riyanta’s initiatives with the Ngupadi Rejeki Waste Bank, which began in 2020.

The programme applies a circular economy approach by processing organic waste through the cultivation of black soldier fly (BSF) larvae. The larvae are used as alternative feed for chickens and catfish, while the remaining organic material is processed into fertiliser.

Beyond waste processing, the initiative focuses on strengthening community organisations, improving residents’ skills and building the group’s capacity to operate independently. Its activities reach approximately 300 households.

BAg Corporate Secretary Aditya Yudanto said the award recognised the community’s ability to develop environmental solutions based on local resources.

He said the programme’s success should be measured not only by the activities delivered by the companies but also by the growth of local initiatives and residents’ capacity to manage their own environmental resources.

Yudanto praised Riyanta’s consistent efforts to mobilise residents through integrated waste management and agriculture, adding that BAg and PLN EPI would continue supporting initiatives that deliver social and economic benefits while protecting the environment.

The companies plan to strengthen the group’s capacity and expand locally driven practices so their social, economic and environmental benefits can be sustained and potentially replicated in other communities.

The collaboration highlights how corporate social responsibility programmes can support grassroots environmental leadership and turn waste management into a resource for local livelihoods. (*)
