Ministry of Environment Seals Factory for Environmental Pollution

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – The Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) of the Republic of Indonesia, through the Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement (Gakkum LH), has sealed the facility of PT Mandiri Pratama Intilogam (PT MPI), an aluminum smelting company located in East Cikarang District, Bekasi Regency, West Java.

The sealing was carried out after the Environmental Supervision Team found that PT MPI had failed to manage emissions from 10 smelting furnaces in operation—four of which were fueled by used lubricating oil, a substance known for its high potential to produce hazardous emissions.

In addition, the facility’s air pollution control equipment, a wet scrubber, was found to be damaged and had been non-functional for more than four months. This finding was directly confirmed by the General Manager of PT MPI during the inspection process.

As a result, emissions from the smelting process were released directly into the atmosphere without treatment, causing air pollution in the surrounding area.

“This sealing is our firm action against business operators who neglect their obligation to control air pollution. We will continue to take enforcement measures against similar violations, both in Greater Jakarta and other regions,” stated Deputy for Environmental Law Enforcement, Police Inspector General Rizal Irawan, in his official statement on Thursday (June 27, 2025).

Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency, Hanif Faisol Nurrofiq, also emphasized the importance of industrial responsibility in maintaining environmental quality.

“Clean air is a fundamental right of every citizen. There is no tolerance for business entities that compromise public health for short-term profit. The Ministry of Environment is fully committed to protecting the environment and ensuring better air quality, especially in the Greater Jakarta area,” said Minister Hanif.

The Ministry of Environment urges all industrial players to thoroughly improve their environmental management systems and comply with all applicable legal provisions. Administrative and criminal sanctions will be imposed on those who continue to violate the regulations. (*)
