India and Japan Sign Memorandum on Joint Crediting Mechanism to Advance Paris Agreement Goals

Enviro News Asia, New Delhi – The Government of India and the Government of Japan signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to implement the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) represented India in the signing, which took place earlier this month. The agreement strengthens bilateral cooperation on climate change mitigation while advancing India’s long-term low-carbon development strategy to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2070.

Under the MoC, both nations will promote projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to sustainable development. The JCM will facilitate investment flows, technology transfer, and capacity-building support, while also encouraging the localization of advanced low-carbon technologies across sectors such as equipment, systems, and infrastructure.

Officials emphasized that the mechanism will enable the international trading of carbon credits generated from approved projects with Japan and other partner countries, while safeguarding India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

The Union Cabinet has authorized MoEFCC to finalize the Rules of Implementation (RoI) and pursue similar agreements with other nations under Article 6.2, in consultation with relevant ministries and the Ministry of External Affairs.

Both governments highlighted that the initiative builds upon the theme “Green Energy Focus for a Better Future” and marks another milestone in Indo-Japanese collaboration on climate action, economic cooperation, and sustainable development. (*)
