Enviro News Asia, Surabaya – Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Ministry of Environment and Environmental Control Agency of Indonesia, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, continued monitoring the national “Low-Waste Homecoming” campaign on the second day of inspections by visiting several bus terminals along the Semarang–Surabaya corridor.
The inspection covered Mangkang Bus Terminal in Semarang, Tirtonadi Bus Terminal in Surakarta, Sragen Bus Terminal, Kertonegoro Bus Terminal in Ngawi, and Purabaya Bus Terminal in Sidoarjo. The visit aimed to ensure that public transportation facilities are prepared to manage waste and maintain cleanliness during the upcoming Eid al-Fitr homecoming travel season.
According to data from the Transportation Policy Agency of the Ministry of Transportation of Indonesia, public mobility during the 2026 Eid holiday is projected to reach 143.91 million travelers, potentially generating around 71,960 tons of waste across public facilities, including bus terminals.
During the visit, Hanif emphasized that waste management at terminals should focus not only on disposal but also on proper sorting at the source.
He explained that although the volume of waste at terminals may not be as large as in other public facilities, the practice of separating waste remains essential to ensure efficient handling and reduce environmental impacts.
The minister also urged operators of public transport facilities—including bus terminals and railway stations—to complete the necessary environmental documentation to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
Through the monitoring activities, the ministry aims to encourage public facilities to become examples of responsible waste management while supporting the national “Mudik Minim Sampah” movement.
The initiative is expected to promote public awareness, improve waste management infrastructure, and ensure that the homecoming journey for millions of travelers is cleaner, safer, and more comfortable. (*)
