Rorotan Becomes Pilot Area as Environment Minister Promotes Household Waste Sorting

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — Indonesia’s Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH), Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, has emphasized the importance of household-level waste sorting during a field visit to Rorotan Subdistrict in North Jakarta on 26 March 2026. The initiative aims to reduce pressure on landfill sites and improve urban environmental quality.

During the visit, the Minister highlighted that effective waste management must begin at the source. He noted that simple and efficient sorting practices at the household level could significantly reduce the burden on landfill facilities such as Bantargebang Landfill. Organic waste, if properly managed at home, can be processed into compost or alternative fuel, while separated inorganic waste can be more easily recycled.

As part of the inspection, the Minister visited the Koepoe-Koepoe Waste Bank Unit and a local compost bio-reactor facility, both of which demonstrate practical applications of community-based waste management. These initiatives enable residents to systematically manage household waste while generating environmental and economic benefits.

Residents in Rorotan, particularly in RW 06, have gradually implemented waste sorting over the past month with support from local community leaders. The programme reflects strong collaboration between the community and local government in addressing urban waste challenges.

Minister Hanif also encouraged residents to adopt additional sustainable practices, including reducing single-use plastics, using reusable containers, and actively participating in community-based waste programmes.

The Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the North Jakarta Administration, will continue to monitor and evaluate the programme. The results are expected to serve as a model for replication across other areas in Jakarta and nationwide, supporting Indonesia’s broader strategy to strengthen circular economy practices and environmental resilience.
