GCF Expands Forest Protection Funding in Southeast Asia

Enviro News Asia, Laos — The Green Climate Fund is scaling up financial support to strengthen forest protection efforts and reduce carbon emissions across Southeast Asia by investing in results-based climate initiatives.

The fund advances implementation of REDD+ by converting verified emission reductions into sustained financial incentives for participating countries. It has approved more than USD 130 million to support forest conservation while reinforcing national systems that maintain long-term environmental outcomes.

In April 2026, the GCF and the Japan International Cooperation Agency signed an agreement to deliver USD 61.5 million in results-based payments to Laos. Earlier, the GCF Board approved an additional USD 72 million for Vietnam under the same mechanism.

GCF Regional Director Hemant Mandal stated that these investments will help governments reduce deforestation while strengthening institutional capacity to sustain environmental gains. He emphasized that the funding model rewards verified climate results and reinvests resources into local communities and ecosystems.

The financing operates under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change mechanism, which enables countries to access payments after independently verifying emission reductions. Both Laos and Vietnam qualified after reporting measurable progress in lowering emissions from forest loss and degradation.

Authorities in Laos will allocate the funds to improve forest management across five southern provinces, including Savannakhet and Champasak. Meanwhile, Vietnam will direct investments toward addressing deforestation drivers in six northern provinces, including Son La and Lao Cai.

The GCF continues to collaborate with governments and development partners to implement these programs, ensuring that financial support translates into measurable climate action, stronger governance, and sustainable livelihoods for forest-dependent communities. (*)
