Indonesia and Japan Strengthen Environmental Diplomacy to Address Global Crisis

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta — The Indonesian government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening bilateral environmental cooperation with Japan through the 2nd Indonesia–Japan Environment Week, marking the second edition of the forum following its inaugural event in Tokyo in 2024.

The collaboration, actively carried out by the environmental ministries of both countries, is part of broader joint efforts to address increasingly complex global environmental challenges.

Senior Advisor for International Relations and Environmental Diplomacy at Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment, Erik Teguh Primiantoro, stated that Indonesia–Japan relations have evolved into a strategic and practical partnership in advancing sustainable environmental management.

“Cooperation between Indonesia and Japan is not only technical, but also strategic in driving sustainable environmental transformation. Japan’s experience and technology, combined with Indonesia’s potential and needs, create strong opportunities for concrete solutions,” Erik Teguh said.

Meanwhile, Vice Minister for Global Environmental Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, Doi Kentaro, expressed appreciation for Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening environmental cooperation and promoting sustainable initiatives.

“We are very pleased to build a better future together. We appreciate the Government of Indonesia and all stakeholders for their strong commitment and efforts in advancing environmental initiatives. This year marks an important milestone in strengthening cooperation, particularly in developing innovative environmental solutions,” Doi Kentaro stated.

Through the forum, both countries promoted knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the development of environmentally friendly technologies that can be widely implemented, particularly in waste management, climate change mitigation, air quality improvement, and circular economy development.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment also emphasized that collaboration with Japan creates significant opportunities to accelerate the adoption of green technologies and environmentally sustainable industries in Indonesia, in line with the country’s targets for reducing environmental impacts while supporting green economic growth.

The 2nd Indonesia–Japan Environment Week also served as a dialogue platform bringing together governments, businesses, academics, and development partners to strengthen cross-sector collaboration in advancing sustainable development agendas.

The Indonesian government expressed hope that environmental cooperation between Indonesia and Japan would continue to expand beyond policy discussions toward concrete implementation that delivers measurable environmental benefits for both countries. (*)
