PLN EPI Plants 1,680 Mangroves in Karawang to Mark World Environment Day 2026

Enviro News Asia, Karawang — PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) and its subsidiaries planted 1,680 mangrove seedlings along Tanjung Pakis Beach in Karawang, West Java, to commemorate World Environment Day 2026 and reinforce efforts to address climate change and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities.

Carrying the theme “Time to Work for Climate Justice,” the initiative was conducted in collaboration with environmental organization CarbonEthics, which will support the planting, maintenance, and long-term monitoring of the mangrove ecosystem to maximize environmental benefits.

Muhammad Aminuddin, Vice President for Occupational Safety, Health, Security, and Environment (K3KL) at PLN EPI, said climate justice extends beyond reducing emissions and should ensure that communities most vulnerable to climate impacts receive protection and benefits from environmental programs.

He said the mangrove planting project in Tanjung Pakis represents a concrete effort by PLN EPI to strengthen coastal resilience, restore ecosystems, and enhance carbon absorption while delivering direct environmental benefits to local residents.

PLN EPI selected Tanjung Pakis Beach because the area serves as an important coastal buffer zone facing threats from abrasion and pressure on mangrove ecosystems. Mangrove forests function as natural barriers that protect shorelines from waves, coastal erosion, and rising sea levels.

The company noted that mangroves are among the most effective blue carbon ecosystems, capable of absorbing and storing significant amounts of carbon. The ecosystems also improve water quality, provide habitats for marine species, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities.

The program involved PLN EPI management, representatives from subsidiary companies, local community groups, and other stakeholders concerned with environmental conservation. In addition to increasing coastal vegetation cover, the initiative aims to restore ecological functions in the area.

PLN EPI and CarbonEthics will continue maintaining and monitoring the mangroves through regular evaluations to ensure high survival rates and assess the environmental benefits generated. The company expects the approach to create lasting impacts for both coastal ecosystems and surrounding communities.

The rehabilitation project forms part of PLN EPI’s commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and supports Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions target. As the primary energy subholding of state electricity company PLN, PLN EPI continues to promote decarbonization initiatives and nature-based solutions as key elements of its sustainability strategy.

Through the World Environment Day 2026 commemoration, the company called on governments, businesses, communities, and environmental partners to take concrete action against climate change. PLN EPI said the planting of 1,680 mangroves demonstrates how collaboration among stakeholders can produce tangible benefits for coastal ecosystems and contribute to building a more resilient and low-carbon future.
