Singapore and Indonesia Sign Environmental Cooperation MOU to Tackle Shared Challenges

Enviro News Asia, Singapore – Singapore and Indonesia have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Cooperation to strengthen bilateral collaboration on environmental sustainability, with the agreement signed by Singapore’s Minister for Sustainability and the Environment and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Grace Fu, and Indonesia’s Minister of Environment/Head of the Environmental Control Agency Dr. Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat.

The MOU provides a framework for both countries to deepen cooperation on shared environmental challenges across key areas including circular economy and waste management, environmental management covering water and air quality, climate change, transboundary pollution, and the development of a future-ready workforce to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Minister Jumhur reaffirmed Indonesia’s strong commitment to strengthening regional collaboration amid increasingly complex environmental challenges. “Today, we signed an MOU with the Government of Singapore, which will be followed by more concrete and operational forms of cooperation. This MOU serves as an overarching framework for our partnership, under which we will undertake a wide range of joint initiatives, including cooperation on climate change, waste management, air pollution control, and efforts to address the impacts of the increasingly prolonged El Niño phenomenon,” he said.

Minister Fu said the two countries share many areas for collaboration in the environmental space. “I look forward to this MOU being a start of many conversations to come at both the government and private sector level, where both countries will focus on implementation and specific areas of cooperation,” she said.

To support the MOU’s implementation, Singapore and Indonesia will cooperate through technical exchanges, joint studies and projects, capacity building, and ministerial and senior official-level dialogues to guide and advance bilateral collaboration.

The MOU reflects the strong partnership between both countries and underscores their shared commitment to sustainable development and a more resilient future. (*)
