Indonesia to Launch National Carbon Registry System to Boost Carbon Trading and Green Investment

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Indonesia is set to launch its National Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK) on July 9 as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s carbon trading ecosystem, mobilize private climate finance, and accelerate progress toward its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets under the Paris Agreement.

Minister of Environment and Head of the Environmental Control Agency (KLH/BPLH) Moh Jumhur Hidayat said Indonesia’s carbon trading market holds the potential to generate trillions of rupiah in economic value and is expected to become one of the largest carbon markets in the region.

Speaking at the Investor Daily Round Table titled “Green is The New Growth: Orchestrating Environmental Management and Green Financing for Development” at the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in Jakarta, Jumhur described carbon trading as a key financing mechanism to support national greenhouse gas emission reduction efforts through private sector participation.

“Six ministries have the authority to participate in carbon trading: the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the Ministry of Environment,” Jumhur said.

He explained that all six sectors will be integrated into the National Carbon Unit Registry System (SRUK), which is scheduled for official launch on July 9.

“The SRUK will be connected directly to the carbon exchange. Investors are already waiting. Once we launch the system and establish the connection with the carbon exchange, they will be able to immediately begin carbon trading,” he said.

According to Jumhur, the ministries responsible for carbon trading are currently finalizing the necessary regulatory frameworks and operational procedures to support implementation.

Although carbon trading activities will span multiple sectors, he noted that all national carbon registration and accounting will ultimately be centralized under the Ministry of Environment through a registry system that aligns with internationally recognized standards.

“Everyone is working toward that objective. On July 9, the system will officially begin operating, and we will provide a more comprehensive explanation. The launch of the SRUK will bring together carbon market participants, policymakers, investors, and business leaders, all of whom will receive detailed information on how the system will operate,” Jumhur said.

The government expects the launch of the SRUK to enhance transparency, improve market confidence, and strengthen Indonesia’s position in the rapidly expanding global carbon market while creating new opportunities for green investment and climate financing. (*)
