Indonesia Highlights Marine Corps Partnership at Iconic US Sunset Parade

Enviro News Asia, Washington, D.C. — Indonesia highlighted its growing defense partnership with the United States during the 2026 U.S. Marine Corps Sunset Parade, an iconic military ceremony held at the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.

Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Indroyono Soesilo and his wife, accompanied by members of the 1973 alumni of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), attended the ceremony on June 30 as honored guests. The event was reviewed by Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps General Eric M. Smith.

Held annually during the summer, the Sunset Parade is one of the United States’ most distinguished military traditions. Staged at the iconic Iwo Jima Memorial overlooking Washington, D.C., the ceremony showcases the precision and discipline of the U.S. Marine Corps through performances by the Marine Drum & Bugle Corps, synchronized rifle demonstrations by the Silent Drill Platoon, ceremonial troop formations from Marine Barracks Washington, and concluding honors that include a rifle salute and bugle tribute to Marines who have fallen in service since the Corps was established 250 years ago.

The tradition originated in the mid-20th century following the dedication of the Marine Corps War Memorial and has since served to strengthen public appreciation of the Corps’ history, values, and commitment to national service.

Indonesia maintains a similar military tradition through the Surya Senja Parade held at the Indonesian Naval Academy in Surabaya, where the Indonesian Navy honors senior officers upon their retirement.

Beyond ceremonial traditions, the event also underscored the increasingly close relationship between the U.S. Marine Corps and the Indonesian Marine Corps (Korps Marinir TNI AL), which continues to expand through regular bilateral military exercises and professional exchanges.

One of the flagship engagements is the Keris Marine Exercise (Keris MAREX), designed to enhance interoperability, coastal defense capabilities, and readiness for modern military operations. The exercise enables both forces to exchange expertise in combined weapons systems, live-fire drills, and integrated air defense operations involving unmanned systems.

The two Marine Corps also cooperate through RECONEX, a bilateral reconnaissance exercise focused on strengthening maritime surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. Another important initiative is the Platoon Exchange (PLATEX), which resumed in 2024 after a temporary suspension to facilitate tactical exchanges and improve operational cooperation at the platoon level.

At the broader regional level, both forces also participate in the annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise alongside the U.S. Navy and the Indonesian Navy, focusing on maritime security, interoperability, and maritime domain awareness.

The expanding defense cooperation reflects the role of marine forces not only as combat units but also as instruments of defense diplomacy. Through joint training and military engagement, Indonesia and the United States continue to strengthen mutual trust, improve operational professionalism, and contribute to stability across the Indo-Pacific maritime region.
