Manggala Agni and Joint Teams Successfully Extinguish Jatiwaringin Landfill Fire

Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – Manggala Agni of the Ministry of Forestry and a joint team have successfully concluded the firefighting operation at the Jatiwaringin Final Waste Processing Site (TPA) in Tangerang, Banten, after a week of intensive extinguishing operations (7/10/2026).

Director General of Forestry Law Enforcement Dwi Januanto Nugroho expressed appreciation to all personnel and elements involved for their dedication and synergy in handling the Jatiwaringin TPA fire.

“The successful extinguishing of the Jatiwaringin TPA fire is the result of hard work, dedication, and collaboration from all parties involved. Manggala Agni personnel and the joint team worked intensively in an integrated firefighting operation through land routes and aerial operation support until all affected areas were successfully extinguished,” Dwi said.

He affirmed that Manggala Agni, as the forestry fire control brigade, was deployed because of its competence and experience in supporting TPA fire management from a previous incident in 2023, reflecting the government’s collaborative approach to disaster management for public safety and environmental protection.

“The success of this operation was supported by the synergy of various parties, including the Ministry of Forestry, BNPB, the Indonesian Armed Forces, the National Police, KLH, the Tangerang Regency and City Fire Departments, BPBD, other regional government agencies, and volunteers. This collaboration was a key factor in ensuring the extinguishing operation proceeded safely, effectively, and conclusively,” Dwi stressed.

Director of Forest Fire Control Thomas Nifinluri explained that handling a TPA fire is far more complex than fighting forest and land fires due to the characteristics of the burning materials.

“In the field, personnel applied the scraping method, excavating the surface of the waste mound using heavy equipment simultaneously with water spraying on fire hotspots to expose layers still holding embers, allowing the cooling process to proceed more effectively,” Thomas explained.

He said that over seven days of operations, Manggala Agni personnel conducted day-and-night extinguishing shifts to maintain operational endurance and effectiveness. The team applied a 5M strategy covering Smoke Management, Water Management, Human Resource Management, Infrastructure and Facilities Management, and Logistics Management, successfully extinguishing all 15 hectares of the burned area.

“Following the extinguishing, the team is still conducting checks and wetting across the entire burned area to ensure no remaining embers or hotspots that could trigger a re-ignition,” Thomas concluded. (*)
