Brazil Launches Global Tropical Forest Fund at COP30

Enviro News Asia, New York – Brazil will launch the Tropical Forests Forever Facility (TFFF) at COP30 in Belém, Amazon, as an innovative financing model for tropical forest conservation. The fund is expected to be among the largest in the world, with an initial target contribution of USD 25 billion from investor countries, which will trigger additional private investments of up to USD 100 billion.

More than 70 developing countries with tropical forests are eligible to receive funding, including Indonesia, Colombia, Ghana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Malaysia. The TFFF mechanism will provide a reward of USD 4 per hectare of forest that remains intact, verified through satellite monitoring.

Brazil’s Environment Minister, Marina Silva, emphasized that TFFF is not a donation, but an investment scheme with market logic. For every one public dollar, it is estimated to attract four dollars from the private sector.

In addition to funding conservation policies, TFFF requires that 20% of the allocation go to Indigenous peoples and local communities, who have proven to be the best guardians of forests and biodiversity.

According to the Brazilian government, TFFF represents an important step to strengthen climate multilateralism and demonstrate the leadership of Global South countries. If implemented as planned, the fund could generate around USD 4 billion annually to protect the world’s tropical forests. (*)
