Enviro News Asia, Jakarta – To commemorate Earth Day, which falls on April 22, several areas in Jakarta went dark for 60 minutes on Saturday, April 26, 2025. This initiative was called the “One Hour for Earth Action.”
The Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, had previously called on the public, businesses, and government agencies to turn off their lights on Saturday night from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The aim of this action was noble: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and raise public awareness about the importance of energy conservation and environmental preservation.
The public adhered to the call. Precisely at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday night, many office buildings, hotels, restaurants, apartments, and major roads turned off their lights for one hour. Exceptions were made for essential services such as hospitals, clinics, public health centers, and fire departments.
Jakarta’s Head of Environmental Agency, Asep Kuswanto, stated that the public complied with the call. “The one-hour lights-off action has had a real impact, such as saving electricity consumption, improving economic efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change,” he said.
